Games for Windows Live (GFWL) was a platform developed by Microsoft for games and online services that could be used on Windows computers. GFWL allowed players to buy, download, and play games online, as well as manage achievements and friends lists. GFWL was officially shut down in August 2013 Games that still rely on the service may either be unplayable or require significant effort to run.
The downloadable version of GFWL still works with old games. It is important to set up an offline account within the respective game itself, otherwise, permanent save states cannot be created.
