The Bethesda.net Launcher was introduced in 2016 and served as a platform for Bethesda Softworks to bind customers to its own infrastructure. One aspect of the new model was charging fees for the use of both in-house and third-party modifications (mods). This decision met with mixed reactions from the gaming community. The launcher also used various third-party services, such as Google Analytics, and requested access to certain device features, including the microphone, webcam and DirectX data.
The Bethesda.net Launcher was officially discontinued in 2022. Similar to other providers, such as Epic Games, a separate launcher is no longer visible. The original services, such as telemetry, account binding and cloud synchronization remain in Bethesda products and are still mandatory.
