Some games on the Steam platform connect to specific IPv4 addresses as soon as they are initialized. Often dozens in one go and some users may wonder why and where their own game requires an internet connection. Behind the connections is the Steam Datagram Relay (SDR). What's with it?

The Steam Overlay serves as a tool for active user tracking. Users are vulnerable when using the overlay in Steam. Depending on the in-game mechanics, the system can be exploited for advertising campaigns and data collection. Additionally, the overlay may interfere with active keystroke encryption.

Since 12 June 2020, Valve Corporation has turned various text filters on the Steam platform in the background. Furthermore, an experiment is underway in the so-called Steam laboratories for chat and text filters (external link) which are intended to hide frequently used obscenities and insults in the chat.
